How will the visitors on my website know that it’s protected?

Quite easily. If you hold an SSL certificate, your website address will begin with “https://” and have a padlock icon, and a “Secure” mark will appear in the browser, as shown in the image below.

Secure I https:\\mydataknox.hr

When a browser displays the website as secure, the user is confident that your website is credible.

Which SSL certificate should I choose?

SSL certificates are usually selected on the basis of the type of website and your visitors.
If credit/debit card numbers and other valuable information is entered anywhere on your website, we recommend the EV certificate, which provides maximum protection and security.
The DV certificate is usually acceptable for any other requirements.

Types of SSL certificates

There are three types of SSL certificates, differing in the level of protection they provide and the way they are displayed in the browser.

  • DV (domain validation) – SSL certificate that protects the domain and its owner. It’s displayed in the form of a padlock + https://name.domain
  • OV (organization validation) – SSL certificate that verifies and protects company data. It’s displayed in the form of a padlock + https://name.domain
  • EV (extended validation) – SSL certificate that provides maximum protection. It’s displayed in the browser as a long green bar containing the company name.

Do I need an SSL certificate?

You need an SSL certificate in the following cases:

  • you have a web shop
  • you accept credit/debit card payments (or other forms of payment)
  • you provide an online service for which your subscribers pass a sign-up process
  • your website requires the entry of user log-in information
  • you transfer private data online
  • you want to inspire confidence with your visitors and users

What is SSL and how does it work?

An SSL certificate is a cryptographic protocol which increases the level of online data security between visitors of a website and the server where the site is located. In other words, SSL is the encryption of data from readable text to coded text which can be read only by using a decoding key. This enables secure communication and protection of the user’s confidential personal information and financial data.
